Learning and Revision

How to use a Flash Card

Step 1 - Look at the question and decide what the answer is.

Step 2 - Press Continue Button

Step 3 - Look at the answer and decide if you were correct of not.

Step 4 - Mark yourself by pressing either the Right or Wrong button as appropriate.

Important: There is an Answer Entry field shown beneath the question. However the use of this field is optional. We strongly suggest that you only use this field for Spelling type questions. If you avoid typing in your answers you can review the most cards in the least time.

Note: FlashFact is not an exam system. It is a system to help people who want to learn, do it as effectively as possible. It is not rigid. You can mark yourself correct even if you didn't know the answer but you will not get the maximum benefit from the process.

The Progress Panel

The Progress Panel which appears at the right of the FlashFact Learning screen, gives an overview of the learning progress for the flash cards in the deck.

The Raw Level

When cards are first added to a FlashFact deck they show at the raw level (green) level of the progress panel. Cards are selected at random* from the raw level to move to the first learning level.
* Depth 1 cards are chosen before depth 2 cards

The Learning Levels

There are 4 learning levels, each with a fixed capacity.

With each successful review at the learning level cards are promoted to the next level until they reach the first at which point they are rescheduled for tomorrow. If moving a card to a learning level causes it to overflow, the excess card is selected as the next fact for review. When only a few cards are progressing through the learning levels there may not be enough cards to overflow the levels, in this case cards may also be selected for review after preset timeout intervals. If no card is ready for review you will be show a wisdom cookie. These act as a mental sorbet to clear the mind and help the effectiveness of the learning process.

If at any point in the learning process you have forgotten a fact then it will drop back to the first learning level.

When a card graduates from the last learning level it is promoted to the first revision level and is scheduled for tomorrows revision session.

Revision Levels

Each time a fact is successfully reviewed it is promoted to the next revision level. These review points are spaced with decreasing frequency. By the time a fact has been promoted to the highest revision level it is only being seen once per year.

If at any point in the revision process you have forgotten a fact then it will drop back to the learning levels.
